Tool Steel for Stamping Dies: D2 vs A2 vs O1 Complete Guide
Selecting the right tool steel for stamping dies is critical for die life, part quality, and production efficiency. This guide compares the most common tool steel grades used in stamping die manufacturing.
How Taize Selects Steel for Stamping Dies
Stamping die steel is chosen for the contact pattern, sheet material, stroke rate and required die life of a specific part — no single grade works for every tool. Taize reviews these parameters against the production volume during the DFM stage, then locks the grade before machining so the die is built around the correct hardness and toughness profile.
Work Grades in Our Stamping Tooling Program
For progressive dies, compound dies and draw dies for automotive metal parts, we work from cold-work and pre-hardened steel families supplied by the same certified mills used across our mold shop — including Daido, ASSAB, LKM, Finkl, Saarstahl, Böhler and Buderus.
D2 / D6 (high-carbon, high-chromium)
High-carbon, high-chromium cold-work grades for long-run cutting and trimming edges. D2-family steel carries high wear resistance and is a first choice for blanking, piercing and trim dies on sheet-metal runs that would quickly wear a softer edge.
DC53 / DC11 (Daido cold-work)
DC53 offers higher toughness than conventional high-carbon grades with good wear resistance, which suits dies subject to chipping and impact; DC11 is selected where maximum wear resistance is preferred. Both are supplied by Daido in our steel program and are common on automotive stamping tools.
H13 / 1.2344 / GS2344 (hot-work)
When a forming operation generates substantial heat — hot stamping or heavy draw work — Taize moves to hot-work H13 (ORVAR8407 / 1.2344 / GS2344 supply channels) so the die holds hardness and resists thermal fatigue across the run.
Manufacturing and Verification
Stamping dies are machined on high-speed CNC centers (Makino and Jingdiao, ±0.003–0.005 mm), finished with slow-wire EDM (±0.003 mm), and verified on a Hexagon CMM (±0.003 mm). Die spotting presses are used for try-out before release, and trial samples are confirmed with the customer prior to production.
Because die steels interact with the specific part geometry, Taize does not recommend a grade in the abstract. Send your part drawing and production plan for a free DFM assessment and a steel recommendation sized to your tool.
